Butler Chorale sings The Sweetest Air

The IMEA (Indiana Music Educators Association) January 20th, Recognized Drew for his 2011 Winning Composition “The Sweetest Air Is Most Often the Thickest” Choral Category. We had the honor of listening to Butler University Chorale perform Drew’s piece. The concert was at the beautiful First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne held by the IMEA State Conference. This was most of our first experience a Chorale Concert. Completely amazing is the only words I can come up with.

Before they sang Drew’s song the Director Dr. Eric Stark told the audience about the piece and the tragic loss. He asked for a moment of silence in remembrance. As the music started the familiar melody filled the room. I can’t imagine anything more beautiful. As the song ended the Director put his hands to his side and the room remained silent for what seamed minutes. I could almost see the smile on Drew’s face. As the applause started so did the tears.

After the concert I accepted Drew’s Award for the 2011 winning piece. Dr. Judd Danby, Chair, IMEA Composition Competition, presented it to me with a hug and his deepest sorrow for the loss of Drew. He shook Bryan’s hand and said it was a year ago we meet for Uncertainty. Judd then took Kailee’s hand and reminded her of the moment they shared as they were the ones sitting next to Drew when Uncertainty (2010 Winning IMEA Composition) was played by Lafayette Jefferson. He remembered that Kailee took the picture of Drew that is on the web site.

Our heart felt Thanks go out to each of the Choir members and there amazing Director Dr. Eric Stark. I had the honor of meeting Eric after the concert. I shared with him the poem that was read at Drew’s service. I put it in a frame and ask him to share with the choir that singing Drew’s song keeps his memory alive and he is truly “Endless” because of the ones who play and sing his songs.

I have been informed by Dr. Stark that he will have a “Official” copy of The Sweetest Air in a couple weeks. It will be up on the site as soon as possible. Dr. Stark also wrote a wonderful story about the song on his Blog Indy Sings. (When Soft Voices Die).
